Considering the impact of COVID-19, most recruiters will now be using online video interviews such as Skype, Hangouts, Zoom etc. to conduct interviews. Preparation is key, so here are some of our top tips for “acing” online video interviews!
Be prepared.
Ensure that you download the software (i.e. Skype, Hangouts, Zoom) and familiarise yourself with how it works before the interview.
Prepare a cheat sheet with some of your key selling points or answers; as well as questions you want to ask the recruiter.
Show up early.
Like a face to face interview, professionalism is key! Be on time, let’s say 10 minutes early.
Dress for the camera
Even though you are home, you still need to dress as you would for an in-person interview from head to toe. This gives a professional impression.
Don’t get distracted.
Make sure your background isn’t distracting. We suggest that you face the camera to a blank wall.
Mute or switch off your phone. The slightest of distraction could easily make you lose focus!
Light the room well.
A clear image is less distracting and helps to connect with the person in terms of facial expression and gestures.
Mute when listening.
This helps to minimize any sound distractions from surrounding sources that could distract the recruiter.
Speak clearly
It is important to speak loud and clear so that the interviewer can hear you, to prevent being asked to repeat yourself.
